Israel confirms air strike on Syria

Israeli officials confirmed Saturday that their country had carried out an air strike against neighboring Syria, the Associated Press reported.

The unidentified officials said the strike was carried out early on Friday and targeted a shipment of advanced missiles bound for Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group, the news agency reported. It did not say where in Syria the strike had taken place. Reuters cited an unidentified US official as also saying that Israel had conducted an airstrike, apparently targeting a building.

Earlier, CNN reported that Israeli planes had launched an airstrike on Syrian territory without entering the country’s air space.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined to comment on the information.

“We have no comment on these reports,” a representative of the office told RIA Novosti.

Syrian government officials also denied knowledge of a strike, Reuters reported.

Netanyahu has repeatedly said that the Jewish state will intervene in attempts to deliver Syrian weapons to Islamic militants, and Israel is widely believed to have bombed a convoy in Syria back in January thought to be transporting anti-aircraft weapons to Syrian ally Hezbollah, though Israel has not officially confirmed carrying out the strike.

Syria has seen widespread military fighting on its territory amid a civil war that began with popular uprisings more than two years ago. Israel has expressed concern that advanced weapons could fall into the hands of Islamist militant groups that could use them against the Jewish nation.
