In pictures: Thousands attend Kashmir militant’s funeral

By Shahid Tantray

Thousands of people, including men, women and children, today attended the funeral procession of a Pakistan based outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba militant, Hilal Ahmed Rather alias Hilal Molvi, who was killed in a gun battle, as police earlier in the morning said, in downtown area of Indian-controlled Kashmir’s summer capital, Srinagar. Amid pro-freedom sloganeering and mourning, the people carried a wooden bed with Rather’s body and his mother sitting besides it. The procession lasted till late night after he was buried in the “martyrs” graveyard of Palhallan, Pattan – 30 kilometers north of the summer capital. A local resident, Razia, while crying said that the village has got another “martyr” and they are happy about it because they are fighting against Indian rule to achieve independence. The police and Indian forces had cordoned the Palhallan area and the traffic was also stopped on the Srinagar-Varmul highway, at least 10 kilometers  before reaching to the native village of the militant. Hilal was a stone thrower in 2010 and he joined LeT in October 2012.

The Kashmir Walla needs you, urgently. Only you can do it.

We have always come to you for help: The Kashmir Walla is battling at multiple fronts — and if you don’t act now, it would be too late. 2020 was a year like no other and we walked into it already battered. The freedom of the press in Kashmir was touching new lows as the entire population was gradually coming out of one of the longest communication blackouts in the world.

We are not a big organization. A few thousand rupees from each one of you would make a huge difference.

The Kashmir Walla plans to extensively and honestly cover — break, report, and analyze — everything that matters to you. You can help us.
