Hooliganism that harms the mosque or misuses the name of Islam will not be tolerated: Mirwaiz

Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday expressed shock and sadness over what he termed as an attempt to violate the sanctity of pulpit of Jamia Masjid- Srinagar’s grand mosque.

Taking to his Twitter Mirwaiz who also delivers lectures from the pulpit of Jamia Masjid said that such hooliganism that harms the mosque or misuses the name of Islam will not be tolerated,“Deeply shocked and saddened by the attempt to violate the sanctity of the pulpit at #JamaMasjid by a group miscreants late on Friday! Such hooliganism that harms the mosque or misuses the name of Islam to spread anarchy and fear among people will not be tolerated at all!,” Mirwaiz wrote.

Mirwaiz further said that Jamia Masjid has been the fountainhead of political and religious identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,“Jama Masjid is the fountainhead of both the religious identity and the political aspirations of the people of J&K , engaged in the struggle for Right to Self-determination, inspired by islamic values of seeking justice and resistance to oppression.” He tweeted.

On Friday right after Mirwaiz Umar Farooq offered prayers in Jamia Masjid  youth inspired by ideology of Islamic State (IS) entered the mosque and raised pro-ISIS slogans while carrying IS flags.

A video that has gone viral on social media shows youth who are five to ten in number raise slogans in favour of the Islamic state. They also wave flags of the IS.

One of the youth stood on the pulpit of the mosque and raised pro-IS slogans. It is the same pulpit from where Mirwaiz delivers his Friday sermons.
