Expressing resentment over non-implementation of recommendations submitted by the panel of interlocutors on Kashmir to the Government of India, former interlocutor and academic, Professor Radha Kumar said that the revocation of controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) was one of the important recommendations of their report. She said that an All Party Meeting should be convened to arrive at a consensus on revocation of AFSPA.

“Today Congress is also supporting the revocation of AFSPA. They had earlier opposed the move but since they are in favour now, it is a welcome step and an opportune moment,” said Radha Kumar.

Calling the execution of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru ‘a setback to peace in Kashmir’, she said, “Guru’s execution has alienated the people of Kashmir. Centre Government has failed to reap the benefits of peace that prevailed over last two years. It is now difficult for the central government to restore peace and confidence of the people of Valley.” She added that the controversial act should be revoked to restore the confidence of the people of the state.

She urged that the Government of India (GoI) should look into the demand of people to return the mortal remains of Guru to his family.

“Death of Kashmiri youth Mudasir Ahmad in Hyderabad is unfortunate,” Kumar added. (KNS)
