Govt forces detain two university students in night raid, protests erupt

Srinagar: Scores of students of central university of Kashmir (CUK) on Saturday gathered near Nowgam campus and marched towards bye-pass road to hold a demonstration over the detention of two students by the government forces.

Suhail Ahmad Dar and Mohammad Ismail Ganie both pursuing masters in political science at the university, were detained by the government forces in a late raid night from their rented room in Nowgam.

Eyewitnesses says that at around 2am a contingent of police and army raided their rented room in Nowgam Chowk.

“They were both beaten up while being taken away. As trains used to be often suspended they both had taken a rented accomodation. They were regular students at the university,” said a faculty member of the university.

Meanwhile, students while holding the banners and raising the slogans, demanded the release of the detained students as they were heading towards the Nowgam bye-pass.

As per the university officials, they boycotted their classes today and gathered to hold a peaceful protest regarding the detainment of their mates.
