Encounter breaks out in Anantnag town


An encounter broke out between militants and government forces in Anantnag town of south Kashmir early Tuesday  morning.

Reports said that government forces in the early hours of the day entered Mehmaan Mohalla, Lal Chowk, area of Anantnag town and launched a cordon and search operation (CASO).

The search team approached  a residential house where two to three militants are believed to be hiding. When the team started advancing, militants opened  fire upon them.

They said that the government forces returned the fire sparking off a  gunfight. The exchange of gunfire started around 4:30 am and is still going on.

Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid took to his Twitter handle, “On a specific input encounter has started at Anantnag, two LET terrorists trapped, J&K Police/Army/CRPF on job,” he wrote.

Lanes and by lanes around encounter site  have been sealed in a bid to prevent people from disrupting the operation.
