Police detained dozens of mourners on Wednesday who tried to take out the traditional 8th Muharram procession in Srinagar.

Raising religious slogans scores of Shia mourners assembled near Jahangir Chowk  and tried to march towards Shaheed Gunj witnesses told The Kashmir Walla.

However, before the mourners could reach there, police swung into action and detained around a dozen mourners.

Talking to The Kashmir Walla the mourners alleged that police not only cane charged them but abused them too, “ It is a blot on the face of Indian democracy that we are not allowed to fulfill our religious obligations,” a visibly angry mourner said.

Adding that the government facilitates two month Yatra but thwarts the Muharram procession, “ What kind of democracy  is this?” he asked.

Earlier, authorities imposed restrictions to curb Muharram processions in the civil lines of Srinagar.

Muharram processions stand banned in Kashmir ever since the inception of armed insurgency in Kashmir in 1989.

Before 1989 the processions would be taken out from Shaheed Ganj area that would then pass through the residency road finally culminating at Dalgate.

The authorities fear that the processions can turn into pro-freedom .

Shia Muslims across the world commemorate the brutal murder of Imam Hussain who was killed by Ummayad Caliph for standing against oppression and injustice.

In Kashmir too Shia Muslims take out Muharram processions and remember sacrifice of Imam Hussain.

This year popular militant commander Burhan Wani dominated the Muharram processions as placards praising him appeared in the processions. Apart from that pro-freedom and pro- Pakistan slogans reverberated during the processions.
