Cross border shelling kills couple, trooper in Jammu

A civilian couple and a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were killed in firing along the India-Pakistan International Border (IB) border in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday morning, Indian officials said.

The couple was killed in RS Sector while as the trooper was killed in Arnia sector and six others including an officer have sustained injuries, reported the Press Trust of India.

The Associated Press quoted a top police officer S.D. Singh saying the cross border firing and shelling began overnight and spread to dozens of posts on Friday in Jammu region of the Himalayan territory. Paramilitary officials say Indian soldiers are responding to Pakistani gunfire and shelling and have described it as “unprovoked and indiscriminate.”

Slain trooper was identified as Constable Sitaram Upadhyay, 28, from Giridih, Jharkhand, who had joined the BSF in 2011. He is survived by a three-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter, officials said.
