Chilai Kalaan, 40-day harsh cold, begins in Kashmir

Srinagar: After weeks of biting cold, the 40-day period of extreme cold called as Chillai-Kalan has begun today in Kashmir.

Chillai Kalaan, which starts from 21 December, will not have any major downpour or snow, as per the Srinagar MeT officials, but slight possibility of rain or snow at the end of it.

Even before this harsh cold period, weather in Kashmir has remained broadly cold, with sub-zero temperatures too.

Post these 40-days, a 30-day period of less cold, considered as parts of chillai kalaa end by the starting of March.

As per MeT, Srinagar recorded minus 4.4 degree Celsius, while as Pahalgam had minus 7.5 degree Celsius and Gulmarg had minus 6 degree.

Kargil witnessed minus 15.1 degree Celsius and Leh minus 12.7 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, in Jammu division, 4 degree Celsius was recorded as minimum temperature in Jammu city.
