Army shielding drug addicts in South Kashmir

The residents of Lassipora in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday claimed that Army troopers refrain them to initiate action against the drug addicts in the area  and encourage youth for taking drugs and alcohol.

A delegation from Lassipora hamlet led by Ghazi Abdul Aziz told that there area has become a hub for drug addicts where in broad day light, scores of youth could be seen taking drugs and alcohol.

The delegation also said  that local Auqaf Committee comprising of respectable citizens had decided to socially boycott any communication with the families whose wards won’t mend themselves. In a bid to aware people about the development, the Committee had pasted posters on mosques, electric polls and walls in and around the whole hamlet.

“Hours after pasting these posters, army personnel from SIDCO camp appeared in the area and tore all these posters. These Army personnel threatened us of dire consequences in case we initiate action against these drug addicts.” the delegation alleged adding that the action of Army troopers indicated that they are encouraging youth to use drugs in the area.

The delegation said that they will not stop and will again call for social boycott with the families whose wards use and spread drug menace in the area. They warned that if Army personnel will again interfere in their social matters then they would launch an agitation in the area and adjoining villages.

Despite repeated attempts, Defence spokesperson could not be contacted.
