Animal slaughtering sparks clashes in Kathua


A few shops were set ablaze during the clashes between two communities in Basohli area of Kathua district following slaughtering of a cow by some unidentified people on late Sunday night.

Eyewitnesses said that immediately after the news spread, on Monday, shops and other business establishments closed down and traffic went off the roads. Scores of people started protesting against the slaughtering. The protestors were demanding action against the accused.

Stone throwing incidents were reported from several areas of the district. The government has deployed police and paramilitary forces to control the law and order situation.

Mohan Lal, the Superintendent of Police, Kathua, confirmed the clashes. “Yes there have been some clashes but the situation is under control,” he said.
