A cyber-attack was launched on Iranian weapons systems by the US on Thursday, according to US reports.

An apparent retaliation for the shooting down of a US drone last Thursday, that the US accused Iran of, the cyber-attack disabled Iranian computer systems that control their rocket and missile launchers, as per the Washington Post.

According to US media outlet sources, the attack had been plotted for several weeks, and was proposed as a retort to the mine attacks on tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

The cyber-attack targeted weapons systems used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which shot down the US drone.

However, the extent of damage to the Iranian systems has not been confirmed so far.

Meanwhile, the US Department for Homeland Security on Saturday warned that Iran too was planning its own cyber-attacks on the US.

Christopher Krebs, the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, said that “malicious cyberactivity” was being directed at US industries and government agencies by “Iranian regime actors and their proxies”.

Tactics such as “spear phishing, password spraying and credential stuffing” were being used by Iran in order to take control of entire networks, he stated.

Attempts to hack into US naval ship systems have also been employed by Iran, the Washington Post reported
