Srinagar: Government of Jammu and Kashmir has announced that it will soon be running 30 new electric buses in Srinagar city.
On Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner, Shahid Choudhary tweeted, “A small beginning. 30 new electric buses to hit #Srinagar roads. More to follow. RTA will allot routes next week. Suggestions welcome.”
According to the reports, each bus will have an intake capacity of 50 passengers (30 sitting and 20 standing) and on one full charge, it can run up to 150 km. As per Mr. Choudhary, “The fare would be slightly lower than that of other buses as the running cost would be lower.”
“Though we have identified routes and stations, we are open to suggestions,” he added.
The buses will reportedly have several security features like CCTV camera, GPS to monitor the movement of the buses, panic button on every seat and emergency door.
Earlier in May, trial for electric buses was held in Jammu city. The government had purchased 40 electric buses under the subsidized Faster Adoption and Manufacturing Hybrid and Electric Vehicles scheme of the central government.
