Talib Hussain, a social activist who made headlines handling the forefront of the campaign: ‘Justice for 8-year-old Kathua gang rape and murder victim’ on Monday has joined Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Srinagar.

At the party headquarter, Mr. Hussain, in presence of the former chief minister and party president Ms. Mufti, joined the party. Talking to the media, he said that his decision to join party came forward after he has noticed an outstanding role performed by CM Mufti during 8-year-old Aasifa’s rape and murder case.

“In Jammu the condition of the Muslims is unacceptable and the minorities like Gujar Bakarwal are more vulnerable. Communal forces are crushing the rights of these minorities in the area. They are subjugating them, making false cases against their children, then there was Aasifa’s tragedic episode in the region and during that time the role of Mehbooba Mufti as a chief minister was outstanding. From one side there were communal forces and some political parties were also in support of them but she took a stand against the culprits and right now they are in jails,” he said.

Added that apart from it she also takes stand on forest right act in the region. “Lal Singh a member of Bhartiya Janta Party BJP had tried to crush the rights of the Muslims in the area and she takes a strict stand against him and removed him from the government.”

Kashmir needs independent journalism…

…now, more than ever to give a voice to the voiceless. The press in Kashmir has operated under tremendous pressures of reporting from a conflict zone but since August 2019 we find ourselves in unchartered territory. The Kashmir Walla is among the oldest independent media outlets in Kashmir and has withstood successive lockdowns as well as attempts to suppress us, fighting back with authoritative ground reports based on facts.

We believe in making the powers that be accountable to their actions but to also hold the mirror to the society. We believe in covering all sides of the story and that empowerment in essence means the ability to make informed decisions. As such we have not allowed our journalism to be influenced by the pressures.

Despite the new and still unknown pressures, we are all the more committed to keep informing you of events and stories that matter. Our recent coverage of events has brought us an increased readership. However, the coronavirus pandemic and resultant economic crisis has affected our operational capabilities. We are facing an existential threat but only your support can help us withstand this and maintain our editorial independence.

We need your solidarity to keep our journalism going. Your contribution will empower us to keep you informed on stories that matter from Kashmir. Show your solidarity by joining our members community. Kashmir thanks you.
