Srinagar: Thousands on Sunday attended the funeral prayers of Zeenat-ul Islam, who was killed in an encounter with the government forces on Saturday evening in Yaripora area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, along with his associate.
The funeral procession was held at his native village in Sugan, Shopian, where first prayers were led by his father, Ghulam Hassan Shah.
Eyewitnesses said that multiple rounds of prayers were held. Shah also addressed the gathering, talking about how his son joined the militant ranks.
Intense clashes started between the forces and locals after which they resorted to tear gas shelling and aerial firing. Many civilians were reported injured.
Considered as an Improvised explosive device (IED) expert, Zeenat ul Islam of Shopian’s volatile Sugan area had joined militant ranks in 2015. He was now commander of Al Badr outfit.
