Like all seasons of the Kashmir valley, winter too has its fascination for people across the globe. Nestled in the womb of Himalayan mountains, the charming weather of the valley touches heart of people for beautiful change. The valleyites have their traditional methods to pass the winters., getting started to prepare for the cold weather. Though, for the last few years, there are many cultural modifications in everything, but some remain to be cultural symbols for Kashmir.

Preparations for the winters begun after autumn takes off leaves from the trees, turning the Valley into orange, locals start storing essential commodities to face the chilling weather. Some of them are charcoal, dry vegetables, fire wood, Kang’ir, warm clothes and more. In addition to all this, Kashmir offers Harri’se – a lamb delicacy only available in the months of winter, as shown in the cover photograph here.

As the apples are plucked off from orchards, trees go dry and leaf less, orchardists cut off the branches, burn, and make coal out of it ahead of the chilling winters.

But with passing time, arrival of electric and gas heaters, the role of Kang’ir has reduced
