Fifth phase of the nine phased panchayat election in Jammu and Kashmir is underway.
The polling started at 8 am in 2512 polling stations, including 769 in Kashmir division and 1743 in Jammu division, official reported.
The officials said that among 2512 polling stations in fifth phase, 848 polling stations have been categorized as hypersensitive, with 755 in Kashmir division and 93 in Jammu division.
Meanwhile 118 sarpanchs and 1046 panchs have been elected unopposed.
An electorate of 404283 will be voting for sarpanch constituencies while as 270295 for panch constituencies.
As per official reports, polling will take place for 309 sarpanch and 1534 panch seats, with 4763 candidates in fray
They said all arrangements, including security related, have been put in place for smooth conduct of the polls.
The Basic Minimum Facilities (BMF) have been ensured for voters and security arrangements are made including central armed police force (CAPF) for the smooth conduct of the elections.
Apart from magistrates, general observer, expenditure observer and micro observer have been appointed for the free and fair elections.
Pertinently, the Joint Resistance Leadership has called for a shutdown in the poll-bound areas and asked people to boycott the elections.
