The Pakistan Cabinet will discuss the summary of the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan regarding awarding of provisional province status to Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday. The Federal Cabinet will be presided over by the Prime Minister Imran Khan.
On Wednesday, Khan approved in principle to change the status of Gilgit-Baltistan to an interim province by accepting the recommendations of a reforms committee. The meeting at the PM House was attended by Law minister Farogh Naseem, Attorney General of Pakistan Anwar Mansoor Khan, G-B governor Raja Jalal Hussain Maqpoon, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak and other prominent figures, the Express Tribune reported.
Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Ali Amin Gandapur would present the summary of the recommendations in the Cabinet meeting, according to reports.
Gilgit-Baltistan, a part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, has witnessed regular protests by activists over alleged human rights violations in the region.
Giving provincial status to Gilgit-Baltistan will be taken as the annexation of what Pakistan calls ‘Azad’ Kashmir – The decision will be in direct conflict with Pakistan’s earlier stance on the region, which they have termed as Azad Kashmir.
