Srinagar: Government forces on Wednesday arrested Aijaz Noori, a head preacher and also the Pulwama district president of the Ummat e Islami party.
Noori was arrested after he had been evading arrest for more than a month. Last week, he led the funeral prayers of slain militant Mohammed Amin Dar in Pampore in South Kashmir.
A party statement issued here condemned Noori’s arrest, calling it “barbaric” and also that the forces had been raiding his house for the past six days. “Forces barged into his house and vandalized the property inside the house of Aijaz Noori,” read the statement.
Calling it barbarism, the party General Secretary said that Noori had been participating in the funerals of militants and civilians killed in recent months.
“Aijaz was being threatened by the Indian Army and other forces after which he made an emotional appeal to the public via a video on social networking site,” the General Secretary added.
