Srinagar: Member of Legislative Assembly from Langate constituency Er Rasheed was detained by police on Sunday after his protest march against the alleged harassment of Kashmiri students at Aligarh Muslim University over Manan Wani’s killing.
In a statement issued here, a spokesman of the party said that despite police restrictions hundreds joined the march in Srinagar in solidarity with students of Aligarh Muslim University, who are being harassed constantly for “offering in absentia funeral prayers of Dr Manan Wani.”
However, the students, in a letter to the university proctor have clarified that no funeral prayers were offered and students didn’t indulge in any unlawful act.
“He was arrested and detained at his residence in Jawahar Nagar. However breaking restrictions hundreds led by Er Rasheed carried out a march from Jawahar Nagar chanting slogans in favor of students of AMU,” the spokesman said.
Talking to reporters during the protest, Er Rasheed said, “Offering funeral prayers of anyone including those of Manan Wani is not a crime but a fundamental religious obligation. AMU Administration has filed charges of sedition against Kashmiri students only under pressure from local BJP leaders just to polarize the issue and gain electoral dividends.”
Manan Wani was an AMU scholar before joining militant ranks in last January. He was killed in a gunfight in Handwara along with his associate.
