Handwara gunfight: Two militants killed

Two militants have been killed in an encounter that  broke out between government forces and militants in  Shahgund  area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday, The Kashmiriyat reported.

Earlier, a joint team of Army, Jammu Kashmir Police and CRPF cordoned Shahgund locality of Handwara last night and started a search operation.

“The hiding Militants Opened fire upon the troops, however the militants managed to escape the initial site of the gunfight, the troops continued the search OPs during which Militants again opened fire, triggering an encounter,” an official was quoted as saying as by The Kashmiriyat.

In the ensuing gunfight, two militants have been killed, The Kashmiriyat quoted official sources as saying.  Adding that the anti militancy operation in the area is still on.

The Kashmiriyat also reported that top Hizb militant Mannan Wani is not trapped in the encounter.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended the Internet services and closed educational institutions in Kupwara.
