Meet Abdul Khaliq Kumar, hailing from Chaar-e-Shareef area of district Budgam, 29 kilometers from Srinagar, known for his pottery. Kumar began practicing this skill at the age of 13 and continues it even at the age of 63 today. His father Abdul Ahad Kumar taught him, and for him, pottery objects were mostly used in old times, where it became his sole way of living and earning a livelihood. In the past few years, Kumar makes customized objects according to the need of the customers. Despite suffering vicissitudes in his business, he has beautifully managed to survive and make a name for himself locally. His son discontinued the profession because of the changing tradition and impact of modernity, making him realize that he could not make a living out of it. However, Kumar worked as a dedicated skilled person, along with his two assistants, who think that he is bestowed with innate quality of giving alluring shape to mud to make it into objects for different purpose.
