Srinagar: On Friday, two trekkers namely, Naveed Jeelani and Adil Shah died after they fell into a crevice of Kolahoi glacier in south Kashmir’s Anantnag.
According to the authorities, Naveed and Adil were a part of a group of 10 trekkers. The group of 10 were on return from the glacier when they were hit by an avalanche. Consequently, three trekkers collapsed into a crevice at Kolahoi glacier, 26 km from Pahalgam.
Naveed was a KAS officer and an alumnus of NIT Srinagar and Adil worked with Alpine group, a tour and travel group in Jammu and Kashmir. Teams of police, Disaster Relief Force and local volunteers rushed to the spot for rescue operstions. Officials also sought the help of the army to lift the bodies of Naveed and Adil and an injured Hazik.
As per the reports, Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan had requested an Air Force helicopter through the Civil Aviation Department to aid in the rescue operations.
“Chief Secretary is personally reviewing the rescue operation. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has asked Air Force to launch rescue early morning,” Director Disaster Management Aamir Ali told local agencies.
The third trekker, Hazik Beigh is critically injured and being treated at a Srinagar hospital.
