Shia mourners were tear gassed on Wednesday by Government forces  to prevent them from taking out a procession on MA road near Dalgate area of Srinagar.

Witnesses said that Shia mourners who started marching from Dalgate area were intercepted by a large number of police and CRPF on the MA road.

They said forces resorted to  heavy tear smoke shelling and cane charging to disperse the mourners raising religious slogans.

Earlier authorities imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar to foil the traditional 8thMuharram processions that lead to problems for commuters.

Muharram processions stand banned in Srinagar since 1989 after the eruption of militancy in the state.
