Srinagar: The National Conference has decided against participating in the upcoming Panchayat and Municipal elections citing the uncertainty over Article 35-A as among the reasons.
Vice president of National conference and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah said that the centre was using the upcoming Panchayat and municipal elections as a tactic to delay the proceedings in court.
He sought centre’s clarification on the article that gives special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
“It is now for the central government to clarify where it stands with regard to Art 35-A. It’s not enough to use Panchayat & Municipal elections simply to delay proceedings in court,” Abdullah tweeted.
Senior NC leader Ali Mohammad Sagar confirmed to The Kashmir Walla that the party had decided to not take part in the upcoming panchayat elections. “Until and unless central government does not come clear on the article 35-A we are not going to participate in the elections,” said Sagar.
Ruhullah Mehdi, NC Spokesperson, took to his Twitter to declare the news regarding party stand on the upcoming elections, “The @JKNC_ will not participate in the Panchayat and ULB elections unless and until the GOI clears its position with regard to Art 35-A. And takes effective steps to safeguard it inside and outside the Courts,” he wrote.
