Police on Wednesday detained dozens of Shia mourners and resorted to tear gas shelling and cane charging to thwart traditional 8th Muharram procession in Srinagar.
Authorities on Wednesday decided to impose restrictions in order to curb mourning processions in civil lines of Srinagar.
However, mourners in dozens reached civil lines and tried to take out mourning procession from Shaheed Gunj. As mourners gathered near Jehangir Chowk a posse of CRPF men and police personnels swung into action and detained dozens of Shia mourners while baton charging them.
Despite curbs and restrictions the mourners carrying religious flags and raising slogans made efforts to take out the procession which was time and again restricted by government forces.
Ever since the eruption of armed insurgency in Kashmir the main Muharram processions that would pass through city centre stand banned by authorities.
