The Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday claimed that two militants killed today at Khumriyal area of northern district of Kupwara belonged to militant outfit Hizbul Mujahidin and were involved in rifle snatching of a constable.
In a statement issued here the spokesman said that government forces today in the afternoon had established a check point (naka) in the area, “While checking at the check point(Naka) was going on militants fired on the party, which was retaliated by the alert forces,” he said.
He said that a brief encounter ensued and that two militants were killed.
The killed militants have been identified as Bilal Ahmad Shah, a resident of Shatmuqam and Zahoor Ahmad and both were affiliated with Hizb.
The spokesman said that both the militants were involved in several attacks on the security establishments
He said that one AK 47 and one INSAS rifle was recovered back from the militants which was yesterday snatched from a policeman , “No collateral damage occurred during the encounter,” he said.
Police has registered a case and investigation into the matter has been initiated.
