Shocking violation of the spirit of justice, says Mehbooba over Aseem Sawhney’s appointment

Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti Wednesday slammed the Jammu and Kashmir government for appointing the defense lawyer in Kathua rape and murder as Additional Advocate General, calling it “a shocking violation of the spirit of justice.”

The state government appointed defence lawyer Aseem Sawhney, who is fighting the case of some of the accused, as additional advocate general on Tuesday. Earlier, he has also served as deputy advocate general in the state high court, Jammu.

Mufti took to social media site Twitter, where in a series of tweets she wrote that it is “ironic that a day after celebrating World Day for International Justice, the defence counsel in the horrific rape & murder Kathua case has been appointed as Additional Advocate General”

Asking the Governor N N Vohra to intervene, she added, “Rewarding those who defend alleged murderers & rapists is abhorrent & a shocking violation of the spirit of justice. Such a move will only serve to encourage the rape culture rampant in our society. Expect the to intervene.”

Sawhney is the defence counsel of some of the accused , who are accused of raping and murdering an eight-year-old girl in Rasana village of Kathua district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
