Kulgam gunfight: Slain militants identified, belonged to Lashkar-e-Taiba

The three militants killed in a gunfight with the government forces in Wani-Mohalla Khudwani area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district have been identified as being affiliated with militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The slain have been identified as Abu Muaviya of Pakistan, Umar Rashid Wani of Nowpora Mir Bazar and Suhail Ahmad of Hawoora Kulgam.

Reports said that  two houses were damaged by the forces during the gunfight that began at 5 am today. One of the houses belonged to a relative of slain militant Umar Rashid, they said.

Earlier, police had said that the militants were involved in abducting and killing of  a police constable Muhammad Saleem yesterday.

While the encounter was going on the director general of police Shesh Paul Vaid took to his twitter handle and informed the trapped militants were the one’s who had abducted and killed a police constable, Mohd Saleem of Kulgam,”Terrorists group that tortured our colleague CT Mohd Saleem of Kulgam & killed him brutally are all trapped in an encounter with J&K Police/Army/CRPF in Khudwani Kulgam.” Vaid had tweeted.

The gunfight began this morning after forces launched a cordon and search operation in Khudwani after receiving specific intelligence input about the presence of militants in the area.

The search operation turned into a gun battle as the militants fired upon the search party of the forces who retaliated resulting in a gunfight, which led to killing of three militants.
