Srinagar: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Monday said that the patients faced inconvenience due to the protest strike by the doctors here, directing government to prepare a list of retired doctors who will be willing to work in such eventualities.

Earlier, the commission had taken suo-moto cognizance of the case titled ‘Strike of doctors’.

The case according  was on board before the chairperson of the commission, Justice Bilal Nazki.

“While going through the material/reports on the file, the patients had suffered on the account of the strike and the commissions is of the view, that certain recommendations need to be made, so that such eventualities are addressed in future,” the commission said.

Nazki added that some of the states have experimented with the idea of engaging retired doctors on contractual or voluntary basis during the period of strike. “The government can explore the possibility of utilizing services of retired doctors during emergencies caused by doctor’s strike or natural and other calamities,” Nazki said.

“Government is directed to prepare a list of retired doctors who are willing to work in such eventualities either on payment or without payment to be maintained in each district and in each hospital, so that services of such doctors are utilized at times of need,” Nazki directed.

Hopefully, this arrangement will work to minimize the inconvenience caused to the patients in case doctors go on strike or in case there is extra-ordinary burden on hospitals or in case of natural or other calamities, the SHRC chairperson said.

He further asked the chief secretary to do the needful, directing the government to file action taken report within three months. (KNS)
