A complete shutdown has been observed across Kashmir against the recent civilian killings and the assassination of Rising Kashmir’s editor, Shujaat Bukhari.
Shops, business establishments and most of the educational institutions were shut while traffic is off the road in civil lines and uptown Srinagar. Though few private vehicles, besides cabs and three-wheelers, could be seen plying on some routes.
Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in the downtown area of Srinagar since early morning for precautionary measures.
Contingents of forces personnel manned the streets at the majority of places in north Kashmir including Sopore, Handwara, Pattan, Sumbal, Hajin and other areas.
Reports said that educational institutions and business establishments are closed while as public transport is off the roads in Sopore, Baramulla, Pattan, and Rafiabad areas of the north Kashmir parts.
Reports added that a complete shutdown is also being observed in south Kashmir’s Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, and Islamabad districts.
Earlier in the week, Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, and Muhammad Yasin Malik has called for a complete shutdown across Kashmir.
Geelani, Mirwaiz, and Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai were placed under house arrest while Malik has been lodged in Kothibagh Police station.
