The Palestinian Football Association is asking the world football governing body, FIFA, to suspend Israel from world football for violating rules relating to racism.
A member of FIFA since 1998, Palestine has complained that Israel restricts the movement of its players and opposes the participation of clubs originating from Jewish areas of the West Bank.
The vote is scheduled for Friday and needs a two-thirds majority of the 209 members to succeed.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter is strongly against the vote and has held talks with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in a bid to prevent the politically charged voting process
A top FIFA official told AFP, “Negotiations are still going on but they are very complicated. There may not be a solution until the final hours”.
