Pakistani prisoner attacked in Jammu jail, battling for life

A day after Sarabjit Singh died in a Lahore hospital after being assaulted in a Pakistani jail, a Pakistani prisoner Sanna Ullah Haq who had been convicted for life by TADA Court Jammu in 2009 was assaulted in Kot Balwal Jail of Jammu on Friday morning. The government has put the jail superintendent Rajni Sehgal and a constable Suman Kumar under suspension while the condition of the prisoner is stated to be critical in PGI hospital, Chandigarh.


Additional Secretary Home, Dilshada Shaheen, who is handling the case told a news agency that during wee hours, an inmate from Jharkhand, Vinod Kumar attacked Pakistani prisoner Sanna Ullah Haq with an axe. “Haq received serious head injuries and was immediately shifted to Jammu Medical College,” she said.

Jammu Medical College Director, Manoj Chalotra said that Haq has severe head injury and he cannot be treated in Jammu hospital.

Minister of State for Home, Sajjad Ahmed Kitchloo told the news agency that the jail superintendent, Kot Balwal, Rajni Sehgal and another official has been put under suspension and a team headed by Principal Secretary Home Suresh Kumar has been set up to investigate the matter,” he said and added that a team comprises SP city Jammu, Johar Singh and other officials of the Home Department.

Shaheen also said that Haq is about 50 years old who hails from Gujranwala Pakistan. “He was arrested on 29 April 1999 in militancy related incidents in Kashmir and was sentenced for life by TADA Court Jammu on 25 September 2009,” she added.

Meanwhile, a case of assault was registered against Vinod Kumar, an ex-serviceman who is also serving a life term in the jail. Kumar had been sentenced for life on charges for killing his colleague in Ladakh six year ago.
