To stop the Friday prayers, the authorities in Jammu and Kashmir didn’t allow people to come out and there were no prayers at the grand mosque in old city of Srinagar. Government had imposed strict restrictions in Srinagar after the protest call by the Mutahida Majlis e Mushawarat (MMM), a joint forum of various pro-freedom groups over the killing of a youth in Varmul district of North Kashmir. However, protests were held in almost every part of the Srinagar city and also in Kulgam, Shopian, Islamabad, Tangmarg, Varmul and Sopore. Despite the strict restrictions, people in Qazigund and Verinag came out on streets and started shouting anti India and pro freedom slogans and later dispersed peacefully. The protests have been frequent in Kashmir valley since the Parliament attack accused Afzal Guru was hanged in Tihar jail on Feb. 9 2013 and buried in the jail.  – Text by Muheet ul Islam
