Two days after the Government of India decided to execute Mohammad Afzal Guru secretly; his family received a letter this morning disclosing that he was to be hanged for his role in the 2001 attack on parliament.

The Post Master General of Jammu and Kashmir, John Samuel, said today that the letter meant for Tabassum Guru, wife of Afzal was sent from Delhi on Friday and reached Srinagar on Saturday; it was delivered to the family this morning, as Sunday was a holiday.

The letter read “The mercy petition of Sh. Mohd Afzal guru S/o Habibullah has been rejected by Honorable President of India. Hence the execution of Mohd Afzal Guru S/o Habibullah has been fixed for 09/02/13 at 8 A.M in central jail no-03.” (Read Letter)

Afzal Guru’s cousin, Mohammad Yaseen Guru, said “we came to know about the hanging only from the media. We were not informed by the government. We should have been allowed to speak to Afzal Guru or meet him and find out if he had any last wishes, at least on humanitarian grounds. It’s really unfortunate.” He added.

Afzal Guru’s family has demanded that his body be handed over for the last rites. His wife Tabassum, through his lawyer ND Pancholi, has requested the Tihar Jail Director General for permission to perform his last rites in accordance with religious traditions.

Meanwhile, 3 people have been killed in clashes with security forces as people continue to protest against Guru’s execution in different parts of the valley- strict curfew has been imposed in Kashmir, internet and cable Television have been snapped.
