Indian Supreme Court Lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan was beaten up today afternoon by a man among three persons who came to his Supreme Court chamber, suspected to belong to a Hindu right-wing group. They roughed him up for his comments of holding plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir- a disputed part on India and Pakistan border. After the attack, Bhushan said, “They objected to some comments I made on Kashmir. I have said a plebiscite should be held in Kashmir. One of them said I am Sri Ram Sena member. Another attacker, a Sikh man ran away from the spot.”
One of the attackers is Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, President of Hindu right-wing group, Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena, who posted on his Facebook wall, after the attack. “I will give my arrest tommorow.desh ko todne ki mang krne walo k sath aage bhi yhi kia jaega. (People who will demand divide in the country will face same in the future) ” While another person, Sagar Rajpurohit, from Ahmadabad commented on this post calling the attackers as cowards. “aap jante bhi hai prashnt bhushan ne kya kaha tha……unhone sirf itna kaha tha ki agar kashmir ki janta alag hona chahti hai to vaha voting kara kar unko alag kar dena chahiye…to usme kya galat kaha…..aap sab log aisi cowardness pe wah wah karne se pehle socho kya sahi hai aur kya galat.” (Do you even know what Prashant Bhushan had said? He had only said that if people of Kashmir want to be free from India then voting should be held there and they should be let free. So what is wrong it that? All of you before praising such coward acts should think what is wrong and right.)
This is not new in India that a person who advocates Plebiscite for Jammu and Kashmir is beaten up by Hindu right-wing groups. Author and activist Arundhati Roy, Human Rights activist Gautam Navlakha, Pro-Plebiscite leader Syed Ali Geelani, and many others have been attacked in past.
Being the member of Anna Hazare Team, leader of the camp Anna Hazare strongly condemned the attack. He said nobody has the right to take law in their hands. “I strongly condemn the incident. Nobody has the right to take law in their hands.”
