17-yr-old militant arrested two weeks after joining

Srinagar: A newly recruited Tehreek ul Mujahideen (TuM) militant was arrested in Pattan area of North Kashmir on Wednesday.

The arrested militant has been identified as Faizan Majeed Bhat, 17, son of Abdul Majeed Bhat resident of Naibug Tral who had joined the militant outfit on 3 October, as per the photo of him with gun that appeared on social media.

According to a police statement some militants were traveling on Baramulla-Srinagar highway, when a police party at a barricade near Baba Teng Pattan were checking the vehicles.

“During checking, while a passenger vehicle was signaled to stop, militants boarding the vehicle lobbed a hand grenade on police party. In this incident one Police Officer DySP Zaffar Mehdi and two other policemen Shabir Ahmad and Ashiq Hussain sustained injuries and were evacuated to hospital. They are stated to be stable now,” read the statement.

The police added that the militants while trying to flee from the spot were chased and one was arrested. Another militant, Showkat Ahmad Bhat, resident of Awantipora, managed to escape.
