A court in Afghanistan has sentenced 11 policemen to one year jail term for failing to stop the killing of 27-year-old Farkhunda, who was beaten to death by a mob after being falsely accused of burning the Koran.

Judge Safiullah Mojadedi on Tuesday found the officers guilty of dereliction of duty for failing to prevent the killing of 27-year-old Farkhunda, who was beaten to death at a shrine in the Afghan capital on 19 March in a case that prompted outrage around the country, AP reported.

The 11 policemen were found guilty of failing to do their duties, while, eight other policemen were acquitted for lack of evidence.  Earlier, this month four men were sentenced to death for the killing, with eight others handed jail terms.

Farkhunda was murdered in a frenzied attack by a mob in 19 March, which was filmed and subsequently circulated on social media.

The killing triggered days of protests around Afghanistan and several world cities and drew global attention.
