Rebels kill 2 cops, injure 4; Police chief visits bereaving families

A police constable was killed while his four colleagues including one Inspector of Special Operation Group sustained injuries after rebels lobbed a hand grenade and opened indiscriminate firing in Sopore town of Varmul district.

According to a KNS correspondent, the firing took place during the intervening night of July 25 and July 26 when a police party of Special Operation Group (SOG) was trying to tackle some stone throwers at Chota Bazar near Jamia Masjid.

At around 2 AM, the militants lobbed a hand grenade and opened fire on the SOG party resulting in the on spot death of a constable Mohammad Sayed of Milyal in Kupwara belt number 368/SPR. Four cops including one inspector Dilraj Singh, head constable Yusuful Umar, Constable Anaytullah and Constable Imtiyaz Ahmad sustained injuries in the attack.

All the injured were shifted to sub district hospital Sopore and two out of them were later referred to B B Cant. Soon after the incident army, police and CRPF cordoned off the whole area and launched massive searches to nab the rebels. According to the correspondent, two youths Mudasir Yasin and Muzaffar Ahmad sustained minor injuries while police was chasing alleged stone throwers in the area.

A police handout released here confirmed the attack.

“In the midnight, miscreants pelted stones on police, CRPF bunkers at SBI and main Chowk Sopore. While the stone pelters were being tackled near Chota Bazar Sopore, militants among the stone pelters hurled a grenade and fired upon police party resulting in on spot death of Constable Mohammad Syed Khan and injuries to 04 police personnel. All the injured police personnel were shifted to SDH Sopore and B.B. Cant Hospital Srinagar, where their condition is reported to be stable. The police party exhibited utmost restraint and did not retaliate as there was every apprehension of civilian casualties,” the handout read.

Baleeg-u-Din, the operational spokesman of Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed the responsibility for the attack in Sopore. In a telephonic statement issued to KNS, Baleeg-u-Din said: “Our cadres carried out the attack in Sopore.”

In South Kashmir Bijbehara town, unidentified gunmen fired at police constable Altaf Ahmad resident of Eidgah Srinagar while he was on his duty at Goriwan Chowk Bijbehara.  Altaf was shifted to SMHS hospital Srinagar but he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.


IGP Kashmir visits bereaved families

Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Kashmir today visited Sopore to take stock of the situation after the last night attack. He also visited the deceased cop’s bereaved family in Srinagar who fell to the bullets of rebels last evening at Bijbehara.

Later on IGP visited the bereaved family of ct. Altaf Ahmed, at Eidgah, Srinagar who was killed while performing traffic regulation duty at Guriwan Chowk Bijbehara.

The IGP while consoling the family on the tragic loss prayed for peace to the departed soul. He assured the family of all possible assistance and said that they should not feel lonely while facing the tragedy but the whole police department is with them to share their grief and sorrow. Ct. Altaf is survived by two sisters aged parents with father being bedridden besides two brothers one of them a differently abled brother.

PDP condemns killings

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned both the killings.

In a statement, the party president, Mehbooba Mufti, has said the killings have no place in a civilized society and they only lead to tragedies. Expressing her heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved families she prayed for the everlasting peace of the deceased souls.
