Several students at the premier educational hub in the Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar, today staged a protest to commemorate the fifth death anniversary of Asiya and Nilofar, who were allegedly raped and murdered by men in uniform in Shopian district on 30 May 2009.
Raising anti-India and pro-freedom slogans around five-hundred students from the University of Kashmir had assembled in the lawns of main campus to pay homage to the victims, a press statement said. The students were seen holding placards which read ‘Justice to Neelofar and Asiya’, ‘Punish the Culprits’, “War has just begun we will see through it,” “Forgetting is a luxury and oppressed cannot afford.”
While paying glowing tributes to the duo one of the students said, “We cannot forget our sisters who lost their chastity and lives only because they belonged to an oppressed region, adding that “First they raped our land, women and now they are raping our thoughts.”
Addressing the gathering, a student said, “Rape is used as a war weapon by India to demoralize us from fighting the Indian tyranny and muzzle the voices of Freedom.”
Amid a tough cordon of the cops present, the authorities denied media to cover the protests and also restricted the march of protesters to reach other departments of the varsity.
