The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday arrested a reporter of a local weekly newspaper for writing a news report on inter religious marriages which had allegedly hurt the sentiments of a particular community.

An FIR 189/13 under section 153 RPC has been registered against the accused, a police official said. “It was found prima facie that the case against him under section 153 RPC is made out. Case has been registered and further investigation is going on,” he said.

Meanwhile, in an emailed statement to a local news agency, the editor of the weekly (Kashmir Life) has apologized for publishing the story. “An illustration that accompanied a story (entitled: Marriages of Faith, May 12 – May 18, 2013) in our newspaper about interfaith marriage in Varmul appears to have hurt religious sentiments of some members of a minority community. We unequivocally states that there is absolutely no intention of hurting sentiments of any religious community and if sentiments were hurt we apologize for the same, although no one has raised any objection to any of the facts presented in the instant story,” the statement reads.
