Police register cases against hundreds of Kashmir youth; arrests trigger clashes

Continued arrest spree of youth by Police evoked wide spread protests at dozens of places in Valley on Saturday.

People in hundreds of came on roads at Palhalan Pattan and Mazhama, Sopore, Pakharpora, Bandipora and at other places demanding the immediate release of arrested youth. People alleged that police arrested scores of youth during nocturnal raids and parents are not allowed to meet them. In South Kashmir’s Kulgam district police has lodged FIR’s against 166 youth, however police said that it has arrested only 10 people so far for their alleged involvement in stone pelting.

A police officer on condition of anonymity said that all but 100 youth on charges of stone pelting have been arrested. “Alone in my zone, we have arrested 22 boys who are involved in stone pelting,” he said and added that he doesn’t have the accurate figure as how many youth have been lodged in jails all across Kashmir.

Reports confirmed that police raided various areas of Srinagar, Bandipora, Kulgam and Pattan and arrested scores of youth. Reports said that dozens of youth have fled their houses in order to evade arrest. Protesting against the arrests, scores of youth gathered in Palhalan Pattan in the afternoon and raised slogans against the government.

Police and CRPF personnel immediately swung into action and cane-charged the youth, who in retaliation pelted stones. The clashes continued for hours during which CRPF men damaged several vehicles parked on the roads, eyewitnesses said.

During the pitched battles, a police constable Iftikar Hussain was injured after he was hit by a heavy stone in his arm. Police swung into action and arrested 5 youth which have been identified as Hilal Ahmed Ganaie, Imtiyaz Ahmed Mallah, Mohammad Aslam Mir, Showket Ahmed and Javid Ahmed.

People in Bandipora observed shutdown against the alleged spree of arrests of youth by police. Scores of people assembled in main market and raised slogans against the police. People warned that if the youth are not released they will launch district wide agitation.

In South Kashmir’s Kulgam district police has lodged FIR’s against 166 youth, however police said that it has arrested only 10 people so far for their alleged involvement in stone pelting. Giving details concerned SHO’s told a news agency CNS that efforts are on to trace the youth and they will be arrested soon.

“No arrests have been made in Kulgam however FIR’s have been filed against 60 youth. In Damhal Hanjipora, six youth have been arrested and case has been register against five youth who are still absconding. Qaimoh police station has filed FIR’s against 100 youth and all are at large while in Yari pora no youth has been arrested,” a police official said adding that four youth have been arrested in Devsar Kulgam during nocturnal raids. – CNS
