Jammu and Kashmir: 71266 acres of land under Indian army possession

The army is in possession of about seventy thousand hectares of land in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This was revealed by Government of India on Wednesday in response to a query raised by Member of Parliament Gulam Nabi Ratanpuri in the Rajya Sabha.

According to the reply given by the Ministry of Defence to the question, the army is in possession of 71266 acres of land in all three regions of the state.

The MP had sought details of thhe area of land under possession of army in different districts of Jammu and Kashmir apart from the area under possession of army in different districts of Jammu and Kashmir on freehold rights, long term lease and on rent. He had also asked for details of the rates of lease and rent for this land relevant at the moment and the date of last revision and next revision.

Reply given by Union Defence Ministry reveals that in three regions of the state, total land measuring 71266.6 acres are under the possession of Army. This land include acquired, ex state force property, requisition, hired land and land under regularization.

The reply reveals that in district Anantnag 1700.845, in Budgam 1927.024, in Ganderbal 599.527, in Kulgam 37.548, in Pulwama 737.699, in Shopain 683.356, in Srinagar 1341.67, in Baramulla 3884.99175, in Kupwara 1856.60875 and in Bandipora 553.1869625 acres of land are in possession of Army.

“…There is no land under possession of Army in Jammu and Kashmir which is on free hold rights category or long term lease. In Jammu & Kashmir the land is being held either on hiring or requisition for which rent is being paid…,” reads the reply

According to the reply, the last revision of rates for payment of rent was done by Government of India with effect from 16.02.2008 and the next revision is due for this year. (KNS)
