After a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF and Army, on December 28, started an encounter in the Bubgam village of Pulwama district (in Kashmir) and claimed killing of the two local militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit, they opened indiscriminate firing on the protesters too, as per the locals, which resulted in injuring at least 15 civilians badly. The incident was followed by massive protests and the authorities clamped curfew in the district town and some of its adjoining villages. Later, the Government ordered a magisterial probe into the incident. Locals told a local newspaper that the people in large numbers from Chandgam and its adjoining villages raised anti-India and pro-freedom slogans and tried to move towards the encounter site peacefully. “However they were stopped by police and the paramilitary forces who fired indiscriminately on the protesters,” the newspaper quoted locals.
