The Beloved Witness: Agha Shahid Ali

“They ask me to tell them what Shahid means—
Listen: It means “The Beloved” in Persian, “witness” in Arabic.”

Agha Shahid Ali

On December 8, 2011 is the celebrated Kashmiri poet Agha Shahid Ali’s tenth death anniversary and we invite you to remember Shahid, the beloved witness of Kashmir, with us. We hope to revisit the crucial relevance Agha Shahid Ali has for the new generation of South Asians and Kashmiris, specifically. With volumes like ‘The Half-inch Himalayas’ and ‘The Country Without a Post Office’, among others, Shahid symbolizes, as his name suggests, his both being the ‘beloved’ of his readers as one of the most gifted poets of contemporary times, and being a ‘witness’ of events in his native land.
